Wessels Library Gallery Hosts Artist Exhibition

March 26, 2015

Wessels Library Gallery at Newberry College, will host an exhibition featuring the assemblages of two Asheville, NC artists, Kathleen Kondalis Franks and Robert L. Franks. Many of the works by Franks have the theme of tools, people and birds. They are not realistic but are a symbolic representation.

"View my sculptures with a sense of humor and entertainment" says R. l. Franks, "If I have communicated to you as a viewer some sense of beauty in my efforts, I am pleased. Much of Kathleen Franks work includes objects that have been trampled by time. Old wood, worn or chipping paint, a patina from years of neglect, found objects - all of these are more beautiful or interesting, I feel, than new slick, perfect objects. The old things have a history that the Japanese have a name for: wabi sabi, the term means something that is beautifully imperfect, impermanent, incomplete, rough, or irregular Kathleen Kondilas Franks." The two artists are husband and wife and they seem to share some aesthetic sensibilities to form as well as giving new life and often meaning to recycled materials.
The exhibition will run thru April 17. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m. 11p.m., Friday, 7:30 a.m. 5 p.m., and Sunday 4p.m.- 11p.m. For more information contact Wessels Library at 803. 321.5229.
