Parking Services

The Newberry College Office of Security is led by a seasoned law enforcement officer who spent over a decade as a Chief of Police in Newberry County. He leads an experienced security force whose only mission is to keep our campus community safe. In partnership with the Newberry County Sherriff’s Department and the Newberry Town Police, we provide training, patrols, escorts and interventions as needed, always focusing on the safety of our students, staff and faculty. There is ample parking in and around campus, and students are allowed to bring vehicles to campus. There is an annual parking permit requirement, and all vehicles must be registered.

  • Parking Services Guide

    • To assist in understanding the topic of parking and transportation at Newberry College, this is a review of parking policies, procedures and regulations. All regulations are subject to change at any time, without notice, as new parking issues may arise throughout the year. Every effort will be made to notify the campus community of any changes. In order to be parked legally on property owned by Newberry College, you must purchase and correctly display a valid Newberry College permit. To correctly display a parking permit, the permit must be fully adhered to the outside top right hand corner of the rear window with the permit fully visible. The college assumes no responsibility for care of, damage to, and/or protection of any vehicle or its contents at any time while it is operated or parked on campus. All vehicles should be locked when left unattended and valuables should be removed. Parking and driving on Newberry College property are permitted in accordance with the regulations and information contained in the Parking Services Guide and the website, which are designed to maximize the use of parking space and assist in maintaining lots.

  • Right to Ticket, Tow and/or Immobilize

    • Newberry College reserves the right to ticket, tow, and/or immobilize any vehicle in violation of established parking regulations at the owner’s expense. This includes the right to collect any fines or fees associated with the ticketing, towing and or immobilization of a vehicle. In addition, persistent violators may have their parking privileges revoked. Vehicles parking on Newberry College property that accumulate over 3 violations will be ticketed and towed beginning on the 4th violation and each time a violation is issued to the same vehicle thereafter. Vehicles with student decals parked in a red faculty/staff space will be ticketed and towed on the first and subsequent violations. Continued and blatant disregard for Newberry College parking regulations is unacceptable and subject to ticketing and towing. Vehicles whose owner cannot be identified through motor-vehicle records or whose owner is not a current student or employee may be towed without notice at the driver’s expense any time the vehicle is found parked on the college campus. In addition, if the operator is found to be a student, unpaid tickets will be billed to the student’s account and a financial hold may be placed on the student’s record until all outstanding fines are paid, thus preventing registration and access to transcripts.

      Vehicles are subject to ticketing towing at any time for any of the following violations:
      1. Students parking in a faculty/staff space
      2. Failure to move a vehicle during lot closing or lot renovation
      3. Illegally parked in a handicap space
      4. Parking in a fire lane
      5. Parking in a reserved space
      6. Parking in a visitor space
      7. Others may be towed as depending on the circumstance at the time.
      VISITOR AND TEMPORARY PARKING PERMITS
      It is the responsibility of the students, faculty and staff to make sure their visitors and guests know the visitor parking regulations and assist them in obtaining the proper permits.
      All visitor parking permits for those that are visiting students, departments and officials are issued by campus security. Call campus security at 803-940-0672 to meet your visitor at the Brokaw Hall security office. Temporary parking passes will also be issued by campus security at the Brokaw Hall security office. Faculty and staff may also obtain the visitor pass for your visitor from security before they arrive on campus. A visitor permit will be issued to the visitor with instructions where to place the permit and where to park.

  • Handicapped Parking

    • Use of handicapped parking spaces are restricted to those vehicles with a state-issued handicapped license plate or displaying a state-issued placard. South Carolina state law requires enforcement of handicapped parking spaces on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week, including holiday periods. Quick errands, deliveries or drop-offs are not valid excuses for parking in or obstructing handicapped spaces. Vehicles parked in spaces designated for the handicapped without this permit will be ticketed and towed by the Newberry College Campus Security.

  • Appeals Process

    • Appeals must be made filed within five (5) days from the date of the violation or the right to appeal is forfeited. Appeals forms can be found on HERE . All appeals are to be made to the Director of Security by email at paul.whitman@newberry.edu.
      Students, staff and faculty are required to know all parking rules and regulations as stated in the Newberry College Student Handbook. Habitual or serious violations may result in the loss of campus parking privileges.

As you explore and grow in your faith, Campus Ministry can provide fun activities, a sense of community, and a spiritual education. Everyone--regardless of faith tradition, denomination affiliation, or age--is invited to be a part of Campus Ministry at Newberry College.

Meet the Campus Pastor

Reverend Worman or "Pastor Ernie" as he is known on campus, has been in the ministry for over 20 years as a congregational minister and a retired Navy Chaplain. He has lived in 12 of the U.S. states as well as Japan and Italy.

Campus Ministry Groups

  • Groups are guided by an advisor from the faculty or staff.
  • Each group is a registered organization on campus.
  • Groups elect their own officers and have an approved constitution and by-laws.
  • Groups work cooperatively with the other organizations to plan events for the entire campus.
  • Groups have regularly scheduled meetings throughout the school year.
  • The president or appointed representative of each active student religious group may serve on the Religious Life Advisory Board, along with faculty and staff members appointed to the committee by the Faculty Council.
  • Each group takes a turn leading Chapel.
  • Groups take part in community service projects including the Safe-Kids Halloween and a Christmas Toy Drive.

Musical & Theatre Groups

The Newberry College Music Department is very proud of our nine ensemble groups. Below is information about the ensembles. To learn more about getting involved, contact a member of the Music Faculty.

  • Newberry College Singers

    • The Newberry College Singers was founded in 1932, and is one of the oldest groups on campus. This premier auditioned choir tours annually and performs choral masterworks that range from the Middle Ages through the 21st century. The Newberry College Singers are under the direction of Dr. Chris Sheppard.

  • Madrigals

    • The Madrigals is an auditioned vocal ensemble that presents stunning performances of choral chamber music from a wide variety of periods. This group presents several concerts each year and tours with the Newberry College Singers. The Madrigals are under the direction of Dr. Chris Sheppard

  • Marching Band

    • The Marching Band is a corps-style ensemble that performs at all home football games. Students traditionally write the drill and music. Newberry is the only Lutheran college in the country with a marching band. The Marching Band is under the direction of Dr. John Roberts.

  • Symphonic Band

    • The Symphonic Band performs exciting and challenging music, closing the spring semester with an electrifying concert. The Symphonic Band is under the direction of Dr. John Roberts.

  • Wind Symphony

    • This select group of 40 -50 students will perform both standard band repertories as well as contemporary wind ensemble repertory designed for this smaller instrumentation. This course is open to all students, both music and non-music majors and may be repeated. Required for all instrumental majors. The Wind Symphony is under the direction of Dr. Jerry Gatch.

  • Jazz Ensemble (Big Band)

    • The Jazz Ensemble (Big Band) plays several concerts each year and tours in the spring semester. Their energetic performances have been recorded on numerous CDs. Newberry College hosts the statewide SCBDA Jazz Festival. The Jazz Ensemble (Big Band) is under the direction of Dr. Jerry Gatch.

  • Jazz Combo

    • The Jazz Combo is a small jazz group which performs frequently at on and off campus venues, and performs regularly at jazz festivals. The group offers students many opportunities to work on jazz improvisation.

  • Woodwind Ensemble

    • The Woodwind Ensembles include saxophone ensemble, clarinet ensemble, flute ensemble, and woodwind quintet, depending on studio personnel. These groups perform in their own concerts as well as at special events on campus. The Woodwind Ensembles are under the direction of Dr. Barry McGinnis. The Flute Ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Korinne Smith.

  • Percussion Ensemble

    • The Percussion Ensemble plays inventive arrangements for a wide variety of percussion combinations. The Percussion Ensemble is under the direction of Dr. John Roberts

  • Brass Ensemble

    • The Brass Ensemble performs at a number of events, including college convocations. The Brass Ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Victor Vallo.

  • Guitar Ensemble

    • The Guitar Ensemble is small ensemble of guitar and non-guitar majors who perform music from Renaissance to Modern to Popular genres of music. The Guitar Ensemble is under the direction of Mr. Matthew Smith.

  • Newberry Chamber Orchestra

    • The Newberry Chamber Orchestra is a town and gown orchestra and is open to both Newberry College students and community members. The NCCO performs music from Baroque to 20th-century literature. The Newberry Chamber Orchestra is under the direction of Dr. Victor Vallo.

Recreation is important for overall health and wellness, and here at Newberry College, we want you to relax and play just as well as you work. There are many opportunities to balance your studies with time off, and you'll have lots of new friends with whom to explore them.

After a full day of class and studies, sometimes you just want to relax with your friends. With our spacious dorm rooms and student centers, you'll have no shortage of places to just hang out and chill.

Fitness Center

Healthy minds need healthy bodies, so come to Newberry's brand-new fitness center to keep in shape. All the equipment is free for Newberry College students and available to use seven days a week with your student ID.

Historic Downtown Newberry

Nearly every building in downtown Newberry is on the National Register of Historic Places. Come for a pleasant day of shopping and dining, visit the brand new Newberry Arts Center, and see a show at the iconic Newberry Opera House for a cultural boost.

Lake Murray Country

Located just 20-30 minutes from campus, Lake Murray is often referred to as the “Jewel of South Carolina”. The lake was just ranked 24 out of 100 best lakes in the nation and has been voted in the top 10 places to boat and live. Boating, jet-skiing, fishing, kayaking, hiking and camping on an island are some of the activities of choice.

Dreher Island State Park

If camping is your thing, then Dreher Island State Park is the place for you! The park offers three islands, 348 acres and access to 12 miles of Lake Murray shoreline. Water sports, nature trails and some of the best striped and large-mouth bass fishing spots make Dreher Island an ideal getaway.

Newberry sits at a hub of excellent travel opportunities. From hiking in the mountains to lounging on the beach, there’s no shortage of day and weekend trips to expand your horizons and recharge your mind. Get out and explore!

Miles of beautiful sun-drenched beachfront isn’t the only thing Myrtle Beach has to offer. Water parks, amusement adventures, museums, shopping and restaurants are just a few of the fun times you’ll find here on the coast.

Two Hours from The Mountains

The Blue Ridge Mountains are a national treasure of nature’s splendor. Spend a day hiking among the towering trees, babbling streams and flowering meadows to refresh your spirit. Nearby Asheville also offers an abundance of museums, gardens, and art centers, as well as tours of the majestic Biltmore Estate.

Charleston

Charleston is the gem of the Southeast, and you’ll see why as you stroll through its charming historic streets. City Market, Fort Sumter, the Battery, and the South Carolina Aquarium are just a few of the ways you can fill up a weekend with enjoyment.

Columbia

Columbia offers an abundance of destinations including Lake Murray, rivers, parks, gardens and Riverbanks Zoo - one of the best in the country. The city is home to great shopping and dining on Harbison as well as superb nightlife in the Vista.

Greenville

This progressive city is loaded with fun activities, places to explore, trendy downtown shopping, and dining. Visit the Greenville Zoo, stroll through Falls Park on the Reedy, or do some hiking at Paris Mountain State Park for a memorable experience.
