Three Newberry Art Professors Featured in Regional Exhibition

April 20, 2015

Newberry College Art faculty are part of a show featuring 25 recent works by four regional artists at an exhibition on the campus of Spartanburg Methodist College in Ellis Hall Gallery.

The exhibition features the work of Newberry College art professors Marjorie Huwa, Bruce Nellsmith, and Paula Riddle, joined by internationally known sculptor Larry Millard who teaches at University of Georgia in Athens.

The exhibition includes a variety of media, including nine color-drenched oil paintings by Bruce Nellsmith based on his trips to southern France and the Mediterranean depicting the impressive falaise (limestone cliffs) found along the coast near Cassis, France. Nellsmith is from Edisto Beach, S.C.

Marjorie Huwas oil paintings subtly flirt with Surrealistic motifs. She is from Prosperity, S.C.

Paula Riddles collagraph prints examine the role of texture in the graphic arts. Millards artwork includes a sculpture installation. She is from Newberry, S.C.

Millards installation is a large, interactive, walk-through piece that accounts for all of the senses, including smell. He is from Athens, Ga.

The exhibition runs now through May 15; it is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m. 11p.m., and Friday, 7 a.m. 5 p.m. For more information contact Briles Lever, gallery coordinator, Professor of Art at Spartanburg Methodist College, 864-587-4279.
