Summer Session Courses Ideal for Adult Learners

The lazy days of summer will soon be upon us and, with them, come a variety of summertime rituals from beach trips and fairs to festivals and family picnics. Another tradition of the vacation season summer school.
Newberry College offers a May term and two summer terms for learners of all ages and abilities. More than an assortment of classes for current students completing a course requirement, summer sessions at Newberry College offer a variety of classes for lifelong learners those people in the community who want to explore an interest area or beef up a particular skill.
May term and summer sessions are an excellent opportunity for the community to take classes at Newberry College, said Dr. Timothy Elston, vice president for Academic Affairs. The courses are fast-paced three weeks for May term and one month for each of the summer sessions so its a more manageable investment of time, particularly for adult students.

Clay Arts/Ceramics I [ART 171] Learn pottery basics and get your hands a little dirty in a fun, creative, relaxing and hands-on class where you will create finished pieces.
Local Flora [MAY 200] Unlock the secrets of your own back yard by learning to identify some South Carolinas many flowering plants.
American Government [POS 121 Blended] Ideal for anyone curious about contemporary politics, participants will learn about the U.S. Constitution, rights, branches of government and political parties, interest groups and elections. Primarily online with some in-class components.
Experiencing Theatre [MAY 110] Develop a greater understanding and appreciation of contemporary theatre by studying various works and attending live productions in Columbia and Greenville. Requires additional purchase of tickets for productions.
The Biblical Heritage [REL 110 Online] Expand your knowledge of the Bible to enhance your faith life.

Nutrition for Healthy Living [PHE 220 Blended] Using a mix of in-class and online learning, students will explore basic elements of nutrition and food as a means to a healthier lifestyle.
Elementary Spanish Language/Culture [SPA 102] Spanish conversational basics will help learners with basic communication whether with Spanish speakers in the local community or as a guest in a Spanish-speaking country.
Psychology of Aging, Dying and Death [PSY 340 Blended] Explore the psychological, physiological and social factors influencing behavior throughout the aging process, including death and dying, in this blended course with both in-class and online class time.
Summer Session II * July 6 August 4
Social Psychology [PSY 236 Blended] Explore aspects of individual behavior how your thoughts, feelings and behavior are influenced by the actual or implied presence of others.
Public Speaking Great for anyone who gives talks or presentations as part of their work or in a volunteer setting, learn strategies to organize talking points and give more dynamic speeches.
HOW TO ENROLL IN MAY OR SUMMER TERM COURSES
Learners have four options for taking classes at Newberry College.
Audit: Learners wishing to take classes without receiving a grade or course credit, may audit a class. To enroll, complet the Special Student Application for at https://my.newberrry.edu/ICS/Admissions/Apply_Online.jnz Auditing students submit a $30 application fee and pay a $50 course audit fee.
For College Credit: Students taking classes for credit but who will not be pursuing a degree at Newberry College should complete the Special Student Application at https://my.newberrry.edu/ICS/Admissions/Apply_Online.jnz Special students pay a $30 application fee; summer tuition is $300 per credit hour.
South Carolina Teachers: Because Newberry College is committed to serving South Carolina schools, all elementary and secondary school teachers are eligible for a tuition discount. Teachers with a valid South Carolina teachers certificate pay a discounted tuition rate of $200 for each three-hour course they take. A $30 application fee is required.
For Newberry College Credit: Students who plan to attend Newberry College in the fall may enroll in summer classes but must be admitted to the College.
