Plans to Expand the Marching Band in the Department of Music

March 4, 2013

Newberry College plans to increase the marching bands size from 80 to 125 students by fall 2013. This will be an opportunity for prospective students who wish to continue in marching band after finishing high school, but would prefer the environment of a small school like Newberry verses the environment of a large state school. Newberry College is the only Lutheran college in the country with its own marching band.

This initiative of allowing interested high school graduates to continue their marching band activities to the ranks of a college marching band is already being well-received, said Dr. Maurice Scherrens, president of Newberry College. Student involvement in these types of co-curricular activities not only improves retention and graduation rates, but also the participation results in a more meaningful college experience.

Newberry Colleges historic music program has experienced a resurgence of growth and momentum in recent years. With 75 music majors and minors currently enrolled at this private liberal arts college, the music program at the College is an important part of the schools culture and history. More opportunities are becoming available within the program each year, students with enthusiasm about continuing in their musical careers after high school are encouraged to consider Newberry Colleges music program.
