Newberry College’s RETAIN Grant Renewed For a Sixth Year
October 8, 2014
NEWBERRY, S.C. (Oct. 9, 2014) The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education has renewed its grant to Newberry Colleges RETAIN Center of Excellence. The RETAIN (Retain Teachers through Action, Innovation and Networking) program seeks to increase teacher retention by providing high quality professional development, mentoring and support teachers in their first years of service.
The RETAIN program has had an impact on more than 600 educators in South Carolina through professional development and online course offerings, said program director Dr. Lisa D. Waller. We are pleased that our partner schools and educators throughout the state will continue to benefit from the valuable programming we offer.
The RETAIN Center of Excellence was created at Newberry College in 2013 to support South Carolinas emphasis on retaining new classroom teachers. Currently in the fifth year of a five-year grant, funding has been renewed for 2014/2016 with a grant of $112,500.
RETAIN works with new teachers from the Newberry County, Lexington Four and Rock Hill school districts and seeks to build relationships with other partnering districts. The program also partners with the South Carolina Department of Education to offer Advanced PACE Mentor training statewide to train mentors who work with alternatively certified teachers.
RETAIN partners with the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement to host a two-day New Teacher Induction Symposium. The event provides professional development sessions, keynote speakers and professional panels for new teachers. The program also offers online professional development courses for recertification and add-on certification for all teachers.
Additional information about upcoming courses, symposia and events is available at www.retainscteachers.org.
