Newberry College Welcomes New Students to the “Wolf Pack”

Almost 150 freshmen and transfer and their families arrived on campus June 27-28 for new student orientation, also known as the Wolf Pack Welcome. The two-day experience includes an overnight stay in one of the residence halls and a chance to experience life at Newberry College and begin forming friendships with their new classmates.

The Wolf Pack Welcome plays an important role in helping students acclimate to their new home away from home, said Jane Willis, dean of Student Affairs. It provides student with the opportunity to begin exploring campus, understand academic and social opportunities available to them and begin finding their place in the campus community so that they can hit the ground running at the start of classes in August.

Current Newberry College students, called Alpha Leaders, accompany incoming students throughout the orientation process. As an Alpha Leader, my role is to ensure that students get the most out of their orientation experience, that they feel comfortable on campus and get all of their questions answered, said Maria Rivas, a senior Biology major. Having a current student as their guide helps the incoming class feel more comfortable and willing to answer questions they might not be comfortable asking of administrators.

The June orientation weekend was the first of the summer. Two additional Wolf Pack Welcome events are scheduled for July 18-19 and Aug. 14-15.
