Newberry College to Hold Commencement on May 9

NEWBERRY, S.C. (May 1, 2015) Newberry College will hold its spring commencement bidding farewell and good luck to the Class of 2015 on Saturday, May 9, at 2 p.m., in Eleazer Arena on the College campus.

Newberry College president Dr. Maurice W. Scherrens will confer an expected 155 undergraduate degrees on the graduating class. A reception will follow the ceremony on the Yost Portico at Holland Hall.

Honorary Doctorate
During the commencement ceremony, Newberry College will confer the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters on John H. Hudgens II in recognition of his service to the College and community as a leader and educator. A 1960 graduate of Newberry College, he is one of eight alumni to occupy the Office of the President, serving as president in 1999-2000 and as interim president in 2009-2010 and 2011-2012. His commitment as a South Carolina educator has spanned four decades.

Special Awards
During the Saturday commencement ceremony, Newberry College will announce the recipients of the following awards:
Dr. Grady L. Cooper Award given annually to a student and faculty member who exemplify loyalty and devotion to the College.
Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award a scholarship awarded to an outstanding graduating male student based on his personal character, integrity and service to others and to their community.
Mary Mildred Sullivan Award a scholarship awarded to an outstanding graduating female student based on her personal character, integrity and service to others and to their community.
George B. Cromer Award Named after the former Newberry College president from 1895 1904, this scholarship awards is given to a 2015 graduate.

Baccalaureate Service
Baccalaureate service will be held on Saturday, May 9, at 11 a.m., in Wiles Chapel. The service will be conducted by campus pastor Ernie Worman.
