Newberry College Ranked Among Nation’s Best

September 22, 2015

Newberry College has been ranked on the 2016 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings, which it released on Wednesday, Sept. 9. The College earned two top rankings in the national magazine’s annual report, finding itself on the lists for the following:

  • Best Colleges in the South (#41)
  • South’s Best Colleges for Veterans (#28)

Once again, Newberry College retained its place among the Top 50 in the top tier rankings at #41 for Best Regional Colleges in the South, joined by eight other South Carolina colleges, including Anderson University (16), USC-Aiken (18), Coker College (20), North Greenville University (27), USC-Upstate (33), Lander University (44), USC-Beaufort (58) and Limestone College (73).

“We are delighted that we have once again been recognized in these prestigious rankings,” said Newberry College president, Dr. Maurice Scherrens. “We have created a learning community that continually strives to make a difference in the lives of students and to set them on a path to successful careers and meaningful lives. It is gratifying to see this commitment recognized nationally.”

Newberry College also earned a repeat appearance on the Best Colleges for Veterans in the South list, landing the #28 spot in the rankings. The College’s focus on individualized learning and personalized attention to students contributed to its reputation as a military-friendly institution. The College enjoys a strong relationship with the local ROTC and many Newberry College veterans have become distinguished cadets in the Highlander Battalion.

“The strength of our veteran’s program comes from a broad support base of faculty and staff who all work together to ensure that student veterans and their dependents have the best possible experience here,” said Newberry College Veteran Affairs coordinator Susan Epting.

About the Rankings

U.S. News & World Report ranks colleges by key measures of quality, including graduation and retention rates, alumni giving, student selectivity and financial resources. Newberry College earned high rankings for its low student-teacher ratio (12 to 1) compared to peer schools, high alumni giving (14 percent) and high percentage of small class sizes (64 percent less than 20 students), among other criteria.
