Newberry College Presents Politics Week 2017

Newberry College will host a week of politically oriented events aimed at broadening students’ understanding of the U.S. political process at the local level and encouraging them to be better informed and engaged citizens. All events are free and open to the public.

“This week’s events are to further our students’ knowledge of the ever-changing world of politics and encourage them get involved with their community and representatives of that community,” said Political Science professor and event organizer Dr. Laura Roost.

Voter Registration Drive

9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Kaufmann Hall and McClurg Center

Students and faculty/staff may register to vote at either of the sign-up stations at their convenience.

From Holland Hall to City Hall

2 p.m.- 3 p.m.

Alumni Music Center

Alumnus Carllton Kinard ’15 will describe his journey from a student at Newberry College to a public office candidate. Shanna Procter, director of the Newberry County Voter Registration and Elections Office will explain the process of local elections.

Behind the Curtain: An Insider’s Look at Local Party Politics

Newberry County Republican and Democratic party chairs Charm Altman – R and Walt McLeod – D will speak on their experiences and discuss why they got involved with politics.

THURSDAY, SEPT. 14, 2017

Constitution Day

Gnann Conference Center, Center for Teacher Education (1121 Speers St., Newberry)

City of Newberry mayor Foster Senn will discuss the importance of community engagement and his experience in local politics. Reception to follow.
