Jazz Big Band Winter Concert

The Jazz Big Band, a very popular ensemble from the Newberry College Department of Music, under the direction of Mr. Bill Long, will present its Winter Concert on Tuesday, November 27th, 2012, at 8:00 PM in Wiles Chapel on the college campus.

The Jazz Big Band will perform standard jazz literature from the swing era to bop and rock classics. New jazz vocalist, Ms. Elizabeth Chastain, will be singing two of the great jazz ballads of all time, Georgia On My Mind by Hoagy Carmichael and Harold Arlens Stormy Weather. Elizabeth will also sing the pop tunes, Teach Me Tonight and Orange Colored Sky. Livin Larger Than Life will feature lead alto, Alisa Dunovant, trumpeter, James Boatright and drummer, Patrick Magwood. James and Joey Finley will be soloists on Doc Sevrinsens Notte A Roma. Two new jazz charts will round out the program, Larry Neecks When Big Bands Ruled The Earth and Larry Burtons Kick Me In The Brass.

In addition to performances on campus and an annual tour, the ensemble play host to the famous Newberry College Jazz Festival on March 2, 2013. This years soloist will be world-renowned jazz trombonist, Conrad Herwig from the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.

The Jazz Big Band Winter Concert is free and open to the public. It is also a part of the colleges Fine Arts and Lectures Series events.
