Call Me Mister Program continues to thrive at Newberry College

Newberry, SC, Newberry College has announced the arrival of five new students in the schools Call Me MISTER program. The MISTER program (Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) is a national recruitment and support program designed to increase the number of elementary school teachers with diverse backgrounds.
Call Me MISTER prepares future teachers through extensive mentoring, scholarship support, and a vast amount of internship experiences that prepare them to succeed as elementary educators in South Carolina. Participants play an important role in teaching students at local schools and performing community service.
Our members have raised the bar very high, and will continue to take their roles to the next step in helping the community during, and beyond, their experience at Newberry, said Reggie Wicker, Campus Director of the Call Me MISTER program. The College provides our students with endless opportunities to educate and be educated something that enables our program participants to be thriving leaders in the community.
Just this past summer, Newberry College junior Michael Hopkins was named Outstanding MISTER at the annual Call Me MISTER Investiture Ceremony held at Clemson University.
The mission of the Call Me MISTER initiative is to increase the pool of available teachers from a broader, more diverse background, particularly among the state's lowest performing elementary schools. Student participants are largely selected from among under-served, socio-economically disadvantaged, and educationally at-risk communities. Newberry will have 12 participants enrolled during the 2011-2012 school year.
