Newberry Collge Hosts NBC Sports Network TV Director for Inaugural Alumni Speaker Series

February 23, 2016

The Office of Student Affairs has prepared an exciting Alumni Speaker Series that begins Tuesday, Feb. 23. The series is designed to highlight specific majors and how those majors have impacted career paths.

John Howard began his broadcasting career right here in Newberry as a freshman in the fall of 1993.  At the time there was a small FM radio station in town that needed an afternoon DJ.  Having DJ'd in various forms all through high school, John took to radio quickly.  But it was the "Introduction to Studio Production" class in early 1994 that inspiration struck. On that particular day, the class watched a behind-the-scenes documentary of the production of an awards show.  For the first time, 18-year-old John saw what a television director and technical director did in both preparation for, as well as the live production of the broadcast.  In that moment John knew exactly what he wanted to do for the rest of his life.  It was in that Langford Center classroom on that day that his professional journey began. John is now concurrent network television director (DGA) and technical director for America's #1 Primetime Show, NBC's Sunday Night Football, and consultant to industry-leading technology companies.
