Dr. Witt received her B.A. in Sociology with a cognate in Psychology from South Carolina State University, her M.A. in Sociology from Clark-Atlanta University, her Graduate Certificate in Gerontology and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of South Carolina. Her Master’s thesis was on the sex ratio differential at birth of Blacks and Whites. Dr. Witt’s dissertation focused on the opportunity structure for older adults in faith communities in South Carolina. Dr. Witt currently serves as the chair of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department. She is the president of the South Carolina Sociological Association 2010-2012; vice president of the National Council of the State Sociological Associations 2010-2011; and the president of the Board of Trustees of the South Carolina Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 2010- 2012.
In 2009, Dr. Witt was selected Professor of the Year for Newberry College by the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities and awarded Professor of the Year for participation in Service Learning by the Value Based Learning Director. In 2012, she was awarded Faculty/Staff of the Year for Outstanding Service to the College by the Newberry College African American Alumni Association. Prior to joining the faculty at Newberry College in 1999, Dr. Witt was the Human Services, Gerontology, and Early Childhood Program Director at Midlands Technical College. She also has taught at Columbia College and the University of South Carolina.
