Bio:

American bassoonist and composer Reed Hanna is an active freelance musician in the southeastern United States. Currently, Dr. Hanna is interim second bassoonist of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra. He also performs regularly on bassoon and contrabassoon with the South Carolina Philharmonic, the Valdosta (GA) Symphony, Symphony Orchestra Augusta, and others. A committed educator and chamber musician, he maintains a private bassoon studio in Columbia, SC, and frequently plays in chamber and new music concerts.

In 2015, Dr. Hanna performed in the Spoleto USA Festival both with the festival orchestra and in performances with New York Baroque, Inc. Shortly thereafter he completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of South Carolina, where he studied with Dr. Michael Harley (member of the acclaimed contemporary music ensemble Alarm Will Sound).

Dr. Hanna’s compositions have recently become more widely known among woodwind players for their interesting and imaginative musical ideas that challenge performers and captivate audiences. Recent publications include Little Suite for bassoon and bass clarinet (also for 2 bassoons), and Red Lights!, his second woodwind quintet. Amidst many current composition projects, Dr. Hanna is composing his Second Chamber Symphony and has begun work on a second concerto for tuba.

Prior to coming to South Carolina, Dr. Hanna earned the Performer’s Certificate from Penn State University, where he studied bassoon with Daryl Durran. He also holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Nebraska—Lincoln, and a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he studied with Dr. Jeffrey McCray and Dr. Jason Worzbyt, respectively.

In addition to teaching and performing, Dr. Hanna enjoys running, swimming, and cycling. He teaches swimming lessons each summer in Columbia, and is looking forward to training for his next marathon or triathlon. All of life is a race, and you are your biggest competition
