His return to primary and secondary teaching followed over two decades of instrumental music instruction in post-secondary education, including conducting and teaching appointments at Indiana University, Virginia Tech, the University of Central Missouri and the University of Oregon.
Casey’s formal education includes degrees in music education and conducting from The Ohio State University, Northwestern University, and Arkansas Tech University, where his principal teachers included Craig Kirchhoff, Richard Blatti, John Paynter, Frank Crisafulli, Hal Cooper, Andy Anders and Vicki Kiehl.
He recently served as Music Director of the Rheinland-Pfalz International Choir (2008-2013), as President of the European Music Educators Association (2012-2013), and in earlier times, as the Southwest division chair of the National Band Association, and Missouri chair of the College Band Directors National Association. He holds honorary memberships in Tau Beta Sigma, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Phi Beta Mu, and his continuing professional affiliations also include the National Association for Music Education, the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, and the American Choral Directors Association.
At Newberry, Dr. Casey coordinates the music education program, teaches music education methods courses, low brass studio & masterclasses, and coaches the jazz combo. He and his wife Elisabeth Ramirez are delighted to be living in Newberry, and look forward to making musical connections with generations of former, present and future Newberry College students.
