The applicant must have an earned doctorate from an accredited institution, and a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching undergraduate nursing students.
Started in 2009, the Nursing program admits two cohorts of 16 students per academic year and needs a leader who will provide vision and mentorship to the faculty, staff, and students in nursing, as well as build relationships with faculty and students in the pre-nursing courses. The Chair will work alongside diverse faculty to ensure the curriculum is relevant and exciting to prospective and current students and be responsible for administering the instructional program in accordance with the college’s mission.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for maintaining relationships with the larger nursing community, our partners in South Carolina, and CCNE our accrediting body. Additionally, Newberry College expects the successful candidate to oversee ongoing Nursing faculty development, to manage our relationship with our NCLEX-RN preparation partner (ATI), and to strengthen our positive relationship with our clinical partners (including Lexington Medical Center).
As a small, Lutheran affiliated liberal arts institution, Newberry College expects the student experience to be highly engaging. It expects faculty members to engage with, support, and guide students inside and outside of the classroom. The ideal Chair understands that the Nursing program is responsible for ensuring students admitted to the program are successful in the program and pass the NCLEX licensing exam on the first attempt. The Chair will be expected to create a culture of support and success in the Nursing department where each student’s individual needs are regularly assessed and supported so the department meets institutional recruitment and retention goals. The chair will also be responsible for regularly reviewing and revising Nursing department policies and procedures to ensure the program remains strong and the student learning environment is supportive and nurturing.
Newberry College has a considerable number of student-athletes who major in Nursing which has been recognized as a strength in our graduates. The ideal Chair will understand the athletic commitments and work with the students, Nursing faculty and support staff to ensure they complete their program and are well prepared for licensing exams on their way to become practicing nurses.
The college is in the midst of a capital campaign that will build a new Nursing building. We expect to break ground on the nursing building in the 2018. A successful candidate will work with administration, faculty, and architects in the design and utilization of active learning centered space within the campaign budget.
The Chair will also be responsible for the recently introduced online RN to BSN program.
